History
The Popeyes we know today was renamed from Alvin Copeland’s “Chicken on the Run” to honour the French “Connection” Popeye Doyle.
The 1972 opening of “Chicken on the Run” in the Arbai neighbourhood of New Orleans, which specialised in Southern fried chicken, did not go well at first. Copeland made the decision to reopen under the new name and focus on spicy chicken made in the New Orleans way.
AFC, commonly known as “America’s Favorite Chicken,” acquired the business in 1992. AFC also acquired Church’s Chicken.
Popeyes was taken to locations with the new proprietors that they had only ever imagined. They not only increased the number of their locations, but also the variety of their food offerings.
In 2009, they introduced the spokesperson “Annie” to their ads, who gave their already well-known recipes some flair and spice.
The corporation grew so quickly that the number of outlets increased roughly every 10 to 12 years. This little chicken, which had a modest beginning, eventually joined the roosters when it unveiled its 500th site in 1985.
